Planet fitness fees

My son was recently in a motorbike bike accident and in icu on life support. I called planet fitness to inform them of this and asked if there was a way to stop and start again once he is out of hospital as he would want to go back to gym. I was advised to cancel his membership and restart it and told all I would have to pay was 800. I thought this 800 was the 2 months he did not pay as I only called them 2 months after the accident. Now 4 months later he went back to gym the day he got out of hospital and was told he must pay 1600. Why was I not informed that it was possible to freeze his gym membership?
