Planet confusion

My gym contract was meant to expire at the end of this month, upon calling I was told I need to cancel 1 month in advance or else it becomes a month to month contract, on the same call I gave the required notice, thereby giving me 1 more month to use to the gym. On going to the gym this morning I was told the contract has expired and I need to pay a cancellation fee???
