Gym membership extension due to covid19

Gym Contract extended without prior notification. I called Planet fitness cancelations department to cancel my 24 month contract which ends on the 6 Oct 2020.The consultant informed me that my contract has been extended to Feb 2021 due to Covid19 and my account being frozen for those 5 months and that if I cancel now I would need to pay a hefty cancelation fee.Are they allowed to do this without prior notification to the member? Am I now obligated to pay a membership I am not going to use?
