I joined the Planet Fitness Just Gym in Newtown about a month ago and used the facilities for about 2/3 weeks. I called the called centre last week and I was informed that they were charging me a cancellation fee of R1300 to cancel my membership! I think this is extremely unfair and I feel like i'm being held hostage to remain a member of a gym I will no longer be using. This also goes against the consumer protection act which was put in place to protect consumers from companies looking to ****** money from people with absolutely no value attached thereto. I was told in a very arrogant and abrupt manner that this is what you need to pay... I don't care about the consumer protection act and you WILL pay this or remain a member indefinitely! Really? According to the act, I have the responsibility of giving 20 days notice of my intent to cancel and yes the company is entitled to charge a REASONABLE cancellation fee in line with the value given to the client for such services. I have used these facilities for less than a month and I am well within my rights to cancel - So please tell me what value have I received for the R1300 you want to charge me? I think this is completely unfair!
