Contract not cancelled as requested

I requested cancellation of my contract on 22 Jan 2018. I never heard back and I never had a bank debit from them. Now in August i try to join virgin active with vitality and they tell me that planet fitness is not cancelled. I called PF only to get through to most unhelpful Mbali who says it will be cancelled end August. What **** is that? I requested this month's ago and because of their incompetence I must suffer. I want it cancelled immediately
