Contract extention

HI

I have a gym contract with planet fitness Pietermaritzburg(50 Durban road) which comes to an end in January 2021, However when i called in to cancel the contract they had advice me that i can only cancel my contract in MAY 2021, due to Covid they had extended my contract, with out no agreement or correspondence with me, So am i suppose to pay for something that I'm not going use, The health department should really go to the gym and see what health safety measures they are taking, The gym is in terrible condition and i will not risk my life going to a place like that., Can someone advice me what should be my next step
