Account never terminated as asked

Had a contract through my boyfriend with planet fitness in 2007. Trying to get a contrct with the witbank branch now. In the process, just to hear that the previous contract was never suspended as I requested and is now overdue with more than R4000? How can you extend contracts with clients if they did not approve it? Even after telephonic conversation to cancel it? I refuse to pay this amount as the reason for cancelling was that I moved to a town with now PF.
