Mite infestation in hay

My daughter bought hay for her rabbits from Petworld N1 City. We both ended up with bites due to a mite infestation. I ended up with a Doctors account R1000 due to my severe reaction to the bites. I now the scars of the bites. Petworld refunded 2 bags and the first bag had mites, so we had to seal both bags and buy new hay from another Petworld in Ronderbosch.

Dear Raygana,

I am Tertius Dixon, the Chief Operating Officer at Petworld, and I wish to address the issue you faced with the hay purchased for your rabbits from our N1 City store.
Firstly, I am deeply sorry to hear about the distress and inconvenience caused by the mite infestation in the hay. The reaction you and your daughter experienced, leading to medical expenses and discomfort, is concerning to us.

It's important to share that, unfortunately, mites can be a common occurrence in hay products. This is largely due to the fact that pesticides, which could control these pests, are not used on animal feed to ensure safety for the animals consuming it. This can result in occasional instances of mite infestation.
Upon consulting with our rodent expert, it's been understood that freezing the hay for about 48 hours is an effective method to eliminate mites before they cause any harm. This precaution can be particularly useful in maintaining the health and comfort of both you and your pets.

We appreciate you highlighting this issue, as it has brought to light an important aspect of pet care that we need to be more vigilant about. I'm relieved to hear you found mite-free hay at our Rondebosch branch and we will be sharing this incident as a learning point with all our branches to better manage our hay supplies.

I apologize again for the experience you had. While we cannot control every aspect of the natural products we sell, we certainly take responsibility for ensuring our customers are well-informed and supported.

Thank you for bringing this to my attention. If there’s anything more we can do to assist you, please do not hesitate to reach out. We value your patronage and hope to serve you better in the future.

Warm regards,

Tertius Dixon
