Poor Handling of Rental Deposit & Unfair Deductions I had a very disappointing experience with this landlord regarding the handling of my rental deposit. From the beginning, the deposit required was double the monthly rental, which already felt excessive. Unfortunately, this became a problem when I vacated the property. After moving out, it took almost two months for my deposit to be refunded, despite multiple follow-ups. During this period, significant deductions were made from my deposit, some of which were based on provisional or estimated amounts, rather than final confirmed costs. Certain maintenance and cleaning charges were authorised without my consent, even after I clearly communicated that I intended to handle the matter myself at a much lower cost. Despite this, contractors were sent in and the costs deducted from my deposit. Utility charges were also unclear and disputed. I was charged pro-rata and interim amounts without final municipal accounts being available at the time, which made it difficult to verify the accuracy of the deductions. What was particularly concerning is that the process became increasingly difficult after I informed the landlord that I had purchased my own home and would be moving out. From that point, the handling of my deposit felt punitive rather than professional. Based on my experience, I believe prospective tenants should be extremely cautious. Ask detailed questions about deposit requirements, insist on transparency, and ensure all approvals are documented in writing. I would not recommend renting from this landlord.
