Why is it a problem to exchange without a slip

I bought pyjama for my son and I would like to exchange them because they don't fit him. I went into sea point store and I was told I can't exchange without a receipt. Please let me know what I need to do to get a exchange without the slip. I think it's unfair to be refused to exchange without the receipt. I can bring a bank statement as proof if I have to.
