Change your mind without consequence

I saw an adverti*****t of a property to rent and app****. After I paid my deposit, rent a prop came back to me and told me, sorry, the people who originally signed the agreement but could not move in anymore, decided that they can move it now so the place is not available anymore. I am sorry, but surely the agreement ceased to exist when they withdrew from it, and then I was next in line to rent? In other words, I can go left and right, rent places, withdraw from them and then change my mind without any consequence, I still get the place? This is not fair and if I had the money, I would have taken it further!
