Disappointing Experience With Cake Sizing

I ordered a 12-inch cake from Oven Delights Umhlanga, but the cake I received measured only 10 inches. When I raised the issue, the owner explained that they place a 10-inch cake on a 12-inch cake board, and that this is how they have always done it. They also mentioned that in over 15 years, I was the first customer to complain. The cake itself was tasty, and the staff were friendly. However, I was also surprised that there is an additional charge just to add a colour to the cake. I regularly buy cakes because I have a large family and there are always birthdays, holidays, and other celebrations. After leaving the bakery, I called two other bakeries one in Umhlanga and one in Durban to check whether this was standard practice. Both told me that if a customer orders and pays for a 12-inch cake, they receive a 12-inch cake. The size of the cake board has nothing to do with the advertised cake size. For that reason, I found the menu misleading. If a customer orders a 12-inch cake, it's reasonable to expect the cake itself to be 12 inches, not a smaller cake placed on a larger board. I also don't feel that the slogan "Trusted Family Bakery" reflects my experience. While the cake tasted good and the staff were courteous, I believe the menu should clearly state the actual cake size being sold so customers know exactly what they are paying for. I would encourage anyone ordering from them to check the cake dimensions before accepting their order.
