“Outsurance told me I was an ‘irresponsible mother’ because I couldn’t afford life insurance.”

If I could put 0 Stars I would. I feel devastated by the way Outsurance has treated me.

I was pressured into giving my bank details for a household contents policy, even though I said I wasn’t ready to commit. I later emailed and phoned to cancel, and was told it was cancelled. Yet the debit still came off my account today — leaving me unable to pay my medical aid, which is far more important for me and my child.

This isn’t the only time I have had a bad experience with Outsurance. In a previous call about life insurance, I was told that because I couldn’t afford it, I was “not being a responsible mother” and that if I died, it would be “unfair” to my child. That conversation was emotionally devastating to me and left me in tears.

Of course, I want to afford life insurance. Of course, I want to leave my child something. But I’m a single mother with no income, studying hard to build a future. So to be shamed, pressured, and financially harmed by a company that claims to care about its customers was heartbreaking.

Outsurance says they value fairness, compassion, and doing right by their clients. My experience shows the exact opposite.

All I ask is fairness, respect, and accountability.

Good morning Erin,

Thank you once again for bringing your concerns to our attention. We’re truly sorry to hear about your experience and the emotional impact it had on you. Please know that this is not the level of service we aim to provide, and we deeply regret any distress caused.

Following a thorough review of the sales calls in question, we can confirm that acceptance of the offer was agreed upon during the conversation. You also mentioned that you would inform the advisor if you decided to cancel. The tone of the call remained pleasant and cordial throughout.

Unfortunately, the cancellation request was received after the premium had already been submitted, making it too late to stop the process at that stage. However, we did issue a refund and sincerely apologise for any misunderstanding or inconvenience caused.

While we believe the initial call was handled appropriately, we acknowledge that the interaction with our life advisor did not meet the standard of service we expect. The shortcomings in that engagement are being addressed internally, as they do not reflect the level of care and professionalism we strive to uphold.

Our clients are at the heart of everything we do, and it’s important to us that they feel valued and respected at every step. In this instance, we let you down, and for that, we offer our sincere apologies.

We value your feedback and appreciate the opportunity to address this matter. If there’s anything further we can do to assist, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Regards,
The OUTsurance Team
