Outsurance offers great service... until you claim :-(
I had a MVA in the early hours of 01 Dec 2017 on the N2 in Cape Town, where my front right wheel contacted a yellow & black roadworks chevron (kept up by a sandbag) when I got out of the way for a minibus taxi. This caused damage to the wheel assembly & the vehicle had to be towed. This seems like a straight forward claim, right? Visible damage to the insured vehicle, no other vehicle damaged, no police on the scene, etc...but wait it get's more interesting... It turns out that towing services that do not belong to the "approved list" operate like the "Wild-Wild_West" & can charge whatever they choose...see my review of RFS24 (Road First Service) for more details on this. STAY AWAY FROM THOSE GUYS!!! When the assigned Outsurance Assor came to my home to take my statement, I at first thought he was friendly & helpful, but when he started insisting on bank statements, Cellphone Tower records, Car Tracker records, etc I became very uncomfortable... like my privacy was being invaded... like I was automatically "guilty until proven innocent". I did not then & do not now see the point for all that scrutiny on a "simple case" such as mine. If there was another vehicle involved & potential lawsuits on the horizon, I could understand a more detailed evaluation of the event. I asked the Assessor and his manager (via telephone) why they require my bank statements, since that seems invasive & pointless. According to them it was to check if I was at a pub/club/restaurant where alcohol could have been served. My point was "what does that prove"? I was not breathalyzed, no blood was drawn, there were no police on the accident scene... so what does such a charge on a bank statement prove? Even if there was such a charge, could I then not have bought a round for friends rather than have consumed it myself? At this point I was told I was being difficult & should comply with what they consider to be a "reasonable request for information". I then offered to send my bank statement if they would send me theirs...which they understandably refused...which was my point... you have no business in my bank statements, just like I have no business sifting through yours! Based on my "refusal to cooperate & provide reasonable documentation" my claim was refused with the verbal stipulation that if I was to be "reasonable" & provide the info requested the claim could be revisited. I refused to be *********ed into giving up my right to privacy. I have nothing to hide, this is a matter of PRINCIPLE....allowing companies to infringe upon your right to privacy is a slippery slope...today it's bank statements, what about tomorrow? It seems to me that when it comes to vehicle insurance Outsurance is happy to take your money every month but then looks for any reason NOT to pay when they get a claim. I don't care about some future "Out-Bonus". I want to know that when something goes wrong, I can TRUST my insurer to fix what is insured, not seek loop-holes and leave me in the lurch. Between 2 properties & 2 vehicles I was paying Outsurance more that R4K per month... for what? If I could not trust Outsurance on a R20K claim, how are they going to act on a R2M claim one day? I cancelled that insurance as soon as I could, at which point all sorts of managers were calling to try and convince me to NOT cancel but like I said.. the trust is gone. I would highly recommend anyone currently insured with Outsurance to switch insurers ASAP.
