Outsurance Liability Claim ****s

My vehicle was damaged by a motorist in a rush attempting to get into a turning lane, while I was waiting at a traffic light. Liability is 100% his and he admitted as much on the scene. He is insured with Outsurance, I am with Discovery Insure. This review is to share my experiences with the ***** practice I was forced into when trying to claim form Outsurance to avoid claiming from Discovery.

The initial email from the Outurances liabilitiy department sets the tone for a rocky ride. The email is extremely threatening and makes it clear that Outsurance is only interested in covering their client and themselves. It then goes on, demanding various documents and clearly states that if you do not comply with those demands, your claim will be refused. They ask for all kinds of photographs, tyres, gear lever, VIN, license disk etc. Anything that will give them a chance of repudiation.

They then explain their time standard saying they have 4-6 weeks to finalise the claim and that it is your responsibility to follow up. In my follow ups, I have learned that they will "make an offer" for settlement, which I assume will be far less than the quotation I have already submitted.

My suggestion to people is not to fall for Outsurances cam in getting you to give them a reason to repudiate your claim. I have been stupid in complying with the Outsurance demands. In future if you have an accident where you are not at fault, immediately get a lawyer to send the guilty party a letter of demand to pay the damages. Read this article from the Ombudsman for more advice. http://www.osti.co.za/somebody-else%E2%80%99s-insurer.html
