Offended, premium increase due to being divorced

I have been an outsurance client for about 10 years or so now. I have been reasonably happy with them and have claimed once mayby 8 years ago and it was a small claim , thats it.. Never have I been more offended. I called to update my personal information as I realised that my marital status indicated I was still married. I am aware that all info needs to be up to date... however I was rather shocked to be told that due to my marital status now changing to divorced my car premium had increased! How can this be allowed? I was told by the call centre agent that this is due to statistics on divorced people's change in habits. I find it discriminatory against my personal decisions or personal matters that do not impact my requirement for insurance. Never have I ever thought ones marital status will change a premium and to be told that 'statistics says you would be more likely to now go out with friends or driver more' is completely unfair.

It's bad enough that males are charged more as they are seen as a 'bigger risk' and even that is unfair to those males who do not fit into that specific group... but this was one too many.

We pay monthly for the 'incase', some of us never use it and others need to... we get charged all these amounts for years and still even need to pay in an excess rate... then to top it off get divorced and you get charged more.

Of course I asked the call centre agent at the time to speak to someone more senior as I find it utter nonsense, even looking at my history with them, only to be told that his manager may not be in the calls and he can't give me contact details. ( for someone who has no say and has to listen to me raising my voice and taking my anger out on him, he handled it well and explained all and how they are trained to deal with irate clients such as myself the agent did well, however... should they be in such a place with their hands tied while others sit back and dont have to deal?).

Following my call I had all other questions run through my mind... what else could I be discriminated by? Kids in the picture or not, citizenship... ?

There are some personal aspects that should not impact one's premiums...

I have missed a call - but I would like someone to still contact me. I am in meetings and if an e-mail opening up a discussion can be sent where I can arrange a specific time that will be appreciated. I cannot return call center call numbers as I don't know who to speak to.

Good day Bianca,

Thank you for raising your concerns with us.

Further to our private response, we can confirm that Themba from our review department liaised with you via email as per your request. Data shows that there is a difference in claims amongst people with different marital statuses which would impact on premium.

We can confirm that your premium was reviewed and you were happy with Themba's assistance.

We are sorry for the initial disappointment.

Regards,
OUTsurance
