Living through a post tornado experience

We had an unfortunate incident where a Tornado hit our home in Honeydew on the 09th of October this year. The 4 walls and foundation were the only things that basically remained. The roof had blown off completely and all contents were ruined due to water damage. After the shock we realized that we needed to start making plans. That same evening we contacted Outsurance who gave us a claim number straight away. We had no idea where to start. Within a couple of days we were allocated a Project Manager – Nicky Bohmer who arrived and really took control of the situation. He really was a God send. He was professional, calm and made us feel at ease. That same day he introduced us to the Contractor – Meyer van Rooyen from M&M Projects. They sincerely understood our fears. They made notes of all the areas that needed repair, Meyer just knew what to look for straight away. We could see that he would ensure the job will be done properly first time round! The house was going to be completely gutted and they asked us to move out what was left into storage. We were given an expected time of completion as the 15th of December. The following day they started. We were permitted to select new tiles, paint colours, kitchen cabinet options, ceiling fans and carpets. By the 3rd day – our dogs and rabbits were placed into the Kennels of our choice and paid for upfront till the 06th of December. We were also given a lodging allowance for the 2 months upfront. We chose to stay in our parents garage and contribute towards the living expenses. Next came the household contents. Siza Mabanga was assigned this task. He ensured that we were paid upfront for the cost of 2 storage lockers for a 2 month period, with an option to extend if needed. We set up a full list of items that needed to be repaired or replaced. Annatjie – the assessor from Allsure Flood & Fire Restoration came through to the storage lockers. We were really heart sore as a lot of the items we worked so hard to buy were ruined due to water and structural damage. We even had a 60 year old Ebner Piano that was handed down to my daughter that was written off. Out of everything only 3 things remained – everything else was literally discarded. Siza ensured that we had the values per item allocated and agreed upon. We were paid out within 48 hours again. He really kept us in the loop through the whole process and was very helpful. During the build-up process we often went through to the house to check up on the progress. The most obvious part was how the team that are employed at M&M Projects were working together, and how each person was being briefed clearly on what needed to be done. Kallie Jacobs who was the Supervisor onsite gave us a full breakdown each time on what has been completed and what the plan would be for the next day. He is such a humble and proud person, and this ethic is clear in how his team take pride in every area that they were tasked to complete. Yesterday was the 27th of November. They had completed the house 18 days early. NO – they did NOT take short cuts. As a matter of fact they made our home look better than the day we bought the property 3 years ago. What was the cherry on top for me…as we waited just after 17h00 … Kallie’s team went through everything again checking the snag list was completed, and cleaning counter tops and floors even though we said not to worry.
