Life Insurance is a costly yet useless necessity.... fuelled by unbelievably outdated rules.
I am so disappointed in the Life Insurance industry in general but the final straw was Outsurance!!
My current payments are high in terms of my so called' 'risk profile' according to a number of consultants because I have Sleep Apnea. (Definition:- Sleep apnea is a potentially serious sleep disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts). Note the word 'potential' - this is important.
I was diagnosed around 14 years ago with sleep apnea and within 72 hours was recommended to use a Cpap machine. (Remedy:- This is the main treatment for sleep apnea. It (the machine) keeps the airway open by gently providing a constant stream of positive pressure air through a mask using a CPAP machine.
Various Medical Aids will subsidize this up to 95% because it is a recognised disorder with a known and accepted remedy for at least my 14 years (definitely longer obviously) My professional career took me to 35 countries, often on a regular basis and my Cpap machine was used on flights and in foreign countries. My passion/ hobby is visiting wildlife parks in SA, Botswana, Mozambique and Namibia. I am geared for these trips with at least 2 spare batteries to ensure my health and safety on these trips.
To the point - I have asked a number of companies for quotes (Hollard EXCLUDED as I am insured via them). All came back with higher quotes..
However, Outsurance phoned this morning and 45 minutes 57m seconds later (after advising the very helpful Consultant of my condition at the outset....) I was declined a policy.
My question is- heart attack victims have policies with Outsurance, Diabetic clients have policies with Outsurance as do amputees based on the fact that their conditions are (supposedly)'controlled'. More examples can be mentioned.
My Sleep Apnea IS controlled - proven after 14 years in very different situations (flights, different power voltages in foreign countries, camping, flu, hospital operations and more).... yet I am declined a quote let alone a policy!!
What is the difference between my 'potential' death from sleep apnea versus my 'potential' death from a known heart/ diabetic/ maybe an amputation condition??
It makes no sense to me.
I do not expect a response as I have blocked Outsurance (amongst others) from contacting me.
My disappointment in the Insurance industry (Actuaries?) grows.... despite some very polite and kind Consultants.
Please share this with my MANY fellow sleep apnea sufferers.... !!!
