Drunk Driver Claim - Terrible Experience
I had a drunk driver drive into the back of my car in May 2017. I called the Outsurance call centre to make a claim and they told me that I have two options - either I call the other driver's insurance (Miway, in this case) and organise the entire payout myself, or Outsurance will organise the claim for me, but then I have to pay R5000 excess. (Surely the other party in this case pays my excess costs for me??)
This is absolutely disgusting service - the accident was in no way my fault, yet I have to pay excess charges for Outsurance to do their job? The only time I should ever pay excess is if the accident WAS my fault. So I decided, in complete disgust, to organise the claim myself (heaven even knows what the point of having insurance is then) and to this day the other driver's company has still not paid out. Many excuses have been made as to why the case has not been finalised yet, but I have never heard of insurance companies taking 8 months to pay out. My car looks terrible - completely smashed up at the back with sensors broken etc, and I have had to drive around like this for the past 8 months.
Outsurance refuses to help unless I pay R5000 excess, and Miway says that they cannot pay out yet. Terrible service from both ends really. But seeing as Outsurance was my insurance company of choice, they really should have had my back. I'm feeling pretty hopeless right now.
Hello JJJJJess
We fully understand your frustration and appreciate the opportunity to discuss the processes the short term insurance industry follow.
Our claims manager, Lerato contacted you and discussed the options with you in more detail.
She also confirmed you will be liable to pay the excess even if the accident was not your fault, but our legal recoveries team will endeavour a successful recovery from the other party as best they can. This will then result in us refunding you your excess.
Lerato has made arrangements for the assessment of your vehicle and we will keep you updated on progress.
