Toothless Consumer Ombud
I requested a refund from SmilingThru resort in Parys after I cancelled a booking. I drew their attention to what the Consumer Protection Act, No. 68 of 2008 suggests in providing accessible redress for consumers and that companies may no longer have a blanket ‘no refunds’ policy pertaining to cancelled bookings. According to Section 17 of the Act, a supplier is entitled to require a consumer to pay a reasonable deposit in advance for committing to a reservation at some other date. In addition, this section allows a consumer to cancel such booking at any stage, subject to the supplier being entitled to charge a reasonable cancellation fee.
Despite this nothing was forthcoming and so I requested assistance from the Consumer ombud. Their ref: 201 ********** 748 somewhere in August 2019. Needless to say this plain and simple matter they could not attend to or resolve until now or probably never will. Shame on you Smilinthru resort and Consumer ombud.
