I have a paid-up RA at Old Mutual which I took out in 2004. I only recently found out that if the value of your RA is below R7,000 (this was not communicated with me when I took the RA out) - you can let it pay out. After a bit of a search, I found my policy number and went to Old Mutual. The lady who helped me, logged on to the system and found out that the value is just over R7,000. She phoned the main branch in Pretoria to find out if there is any way so that they can pay it out. She asked the person on the line if she could maybe explain it to me, but the person didn't. They just said that they can't help me and I will have to wait until the policy has matured. I spoke to another investment company and they said if I apply for the current surrender value, the value may well drop below R7,000 as they may charge a further penalty for surrendering the RA early. This was not even an option from Old Mutual (they didn't explain this to me, they just said that they can't help me). It would be great if someone can assist.
