My wife took out an annuity which I paid for the last 15 years, due her being retired. Her intention was never to receive a monthly pension as she is now a housewife. I have been corresponding for the past 4 years with Old Mutual with respect to her payout and every time I was notified that she can only withdraw at the age of 55. Come the age of 55 I contacted the broker who forwarded the documents for payout. To our surprise we where now notified that due to changes in legislation only a third may now be paid out. I questioned the broker who admitted that it was a mistake from there side not to inform that the amount must not exceed R247k. Problem is the investment is now already at R270k and there only excuse now is that sorry its legislation and they now can do nothing about it. (Even after I conceded that just then pay out my R247k) Fact is that they've draw commission and an admin fee for 20 years which was intended to be remuneration for the service they render to the client, but at the end of the period come the client only to realize that they stuffed it up and that you paid for a non existing service/assistance. Furthermore, since they now will only pay out 1 third in cash I requested if I cannot apply for a loan for the balance, which the monthly annuity payment and cancelled debit order would cover. After reviewing my credit rating I got the following reply: Mr. Coetzer you are highly Creditable and we would love to do business with you, but unfortunately because you work on mine in the Northern Cape that previously had retrenchments we cannot accommodate such an amount. This is ridiculous as since when is an employer judged on the creditability of a client. Furthermore the 4 or 5 mines referred to are the main (sole) economic drivers in the area which thus implies a worker from the mine is not Creditable, but a worker from a contractor whose sole income is from the mines are???????? I have seen the coffin saga is not surprised. I have written a mail to there complaints section with no reply to date. I seriously envisage also making my story viral to warn current and possible future Old Mutual clients of their incompetency.
Best regards,
