Imagine you arrange with Old JW to drop family antiques with them and on arrival, you're told they're 'to busy' but to just sign the form, they'll 'fill it in' and that you can pop back and together run through the reserves together. So far - alright. You then attempt to set up a meeting to fix the reserves several times (proof available), only to be rebuffed each time. You then discover that all your items have been placed on a 'No Reserve' auction (without your permission) and that among the losses you incur, just by way of example, is an original oil painting with a comparative value of R110 000 (https://www.saatchiart.com/en-za/art/Painting-Heartbeat-of-Africa/***/view) that was sold for, I kid you not...R125..00. When I set up a meeting with OldJW I was told that 'the artist hadn't appeared on the site they use for reference', so I asked if they'd heard of Google...because, that's how the example above can easily be found. Ultimately I took a knock on 25 items at no reserve that had never been placed on auction before (I was also told my stock was old stock...the problem is that because OldJW have their past auctions online it can be immediately proved that my lots hadn't been offered before). The lack of concern for OldJW's part as to how the whole issue was handled (I'm blown away they apparently don't have Google, and could place items handed over in trust on a 'bric-a-brac no reserve auction while ignoring my repeated requests for us to meet and establish reserves). On top of this I was asked to 'identify' what items belonged to me because OldJW had no idea what belonged to who (once again, proof available).

My complaint is not related to the prices achieved at auction, but rather to the extremely poor performance of the accounting department with regard to communication and payment. Goods that I consigned were sold at auction in May 2025. I received no feedback confirming which items had been sold or the prices achieved. After repeatedly following up, I was eventually provided with reports reflecting payments for goods sold in June 2025; however, no reports were provided for goods sold in May 2025. From that point onward, I made numerous attempts to resolve the matter and was repeatedly given the runaround by a staff member in the accounting department, Lesego. After continued follow-ups, I eventually received a payment on 9 December 2025, but this payment did not reflect the full amount outstanding. I queried the shortfall on several occasions with Olga in the accounting department. On 17 December 2025, I received the following message from her: “The amount of R*** is loaded and I will request for it to be released immediately and apologise for the inconvenience caused.” As of today, 5 January 2026, no further payment has been received. The ongoing lack of accountability, poor communication, and failure to resolve this matter timeously are unacceptable. It appears that Olga takes little pride in her work, and her handling of this matter reflects poorly on Old Johannesburg Auctioneers as a whole.
