On 11 November 2017 at around 15:15, I used the toilets at Clearwater Mall and upon exiting I saw an Ocean Basket male employee entering male toilets with his kitchen apron and 2 kitchen dishcloths hanging on either side of him. I was appalled at the thought of those same cloths being used on me or any other customer at Ocean Basket. The thought of those dishcloths coming into contact with urine/toilet seats, feaces, unwashed hands etc is just gross. So i decided to wait until the waiter came out of the toilets to take a picture of the scene and report it to the manager in charge. Unfortunatley I could not take a picture quick enough.
I immediately went to the store and asked for the manager. Some manager by the name of Greg Zouda approached me and I told him of the incident. His response was more nauseating than the scene I had encountered in the bathrooms. He said the following:
"So? you can't expect me to monitor my employees and strip them down whenever they go to the toilet? don't you go to the toilet with your handbag and place it on the floor? Do you now notice how much germs you carry around with you unaware? There are germs everywhere. I have never heard of such a complaint from any of my customers before but anyway, I will lodge a complaint at head office on your behalf" (This was all said in the most meanest and sarcastic tone and manner ever, as though I was an intruder/beggar in a white man's shop during the apartheid era). I asked him how he expected such a complaint from his customers whereas they are seated down eating germs, unaware of what goes on in bathrooms.
Greg Zouda's voice was raised, he would interrupt me before I finish a sentence and his hands were flying all over the place with annoyance and sarcasm. His colleagues then gathered close to where we were and they were all starring at me. I then asked for his name and surname so I could lodge a complaint. He said his first name and thereafter said: "ACTUALLY, I WILL WRITE DOWN FOR YOU". I told him he has lost a valuable customer and that I would report the incident at Head office. He simply said it was fine. He wrote down his name and surname on a piece of paper.
Firstly, i cannot comprehend how Greg can compare a handbag in a toilet cubicle to a KITCHEN dish cloth in a TOILET cubicle. The same dishcloth that will be used to serve customer's food. What is sad about this whole situation is that Ocean Basket has lost a valuable customer who used to frequent there with her family of 7. Furthermore, it is sad that a serious hygiene issue would be handled in such a manner by a so-called manager, instead of him apologising and 'attending' or really attending to the situation.
