A truly memorably awful experience!
Not wanting to go the Waterfall Mall, we decided to visit the Ocean Basket franchise in the Chilli Lane Shopping Centre in Sunninghill. It was our first – and last – visit. For starters we ordered the potato rosti and the Mediterranean rice ***** (which we assume was a local take on arancini). The potato rosti arrived semi-cooked and soaked in oil. One bite (and the taste of raw potato) and it was sent back in disgust, with a request that it be redone. It was never returned, but was taken off the bill, no questions asked! Rice ***** were equally gross – deep fried in a thick layer of dough like a carapace - with very little trace of any haloumi (or flavour). For mains we ordered the sole (with chips) and sushi. Sole was slimy and smelt off, chips badly burned and soaked in oil. We called the assistant manager and explained. She picked up the pan, took a chip between her fingers and squeezed them doubtfully (presumably to see if were not just being two really difficult customers). We then spoke to the manager (who seems to spend his time between watching soccer on the TV and gazing at his cellphone). He was helpful but said that “it happens sometimes as they get the fish from head office”. The kingklip was ordered, but with rice (didn’t want to risk the chips again!). Another bad piece of fish and stodgy rice boiled to death. We had to smile through gritted teeth and say that everything was okay to the manager. At this point, all the staff in the restaurant had pegged us as complaining customers so they stood around casting meaningful glances in our direction. It was like being in some weird zombie movie! This was without a doubt the worst restaurant experience we’ve had in recent memory. How does this place even function as a restaurant that is part of a franchise?
