SPCA Roodepoort

There is a particular spca we visited that we are worried about and Im hoping these issues can be dealt with.

1. All the staff accept the workers are all extremely unfriendly and unhelpful with a very bad attitude... the tone of voice and the faces. None of the adoption processes were explained properly and we were running around them all the time. Its like they didnt want us to have any dog there. I had to keep asking so what the next step. They make it sound easy but its not easy. It would be nice if a person knew exactly where they stand from the start. I had questions about the dog being sterilized and this was like asking questions about doing crime. Like can the dog pick up weight.. etc... I thought they were innocent questions. 2. Cruelty to animals on the property. In a discussion with a staff member I asked do you ever walk your dogs or let them out. The reply was seldom and not really. 3. We were very keen on one of the animals and we had second thoughts as this dog was no where near ready for a home as it was shaking so badly and it refuses to eat its food. In approaching the dog it wet itself. One of the handlers managed to get it out muzzling the dog with the leash and acting by force. None of the staff or handlers have any animal behavior experience in approaching an animal of this kind. I asked how long has he been here? The reply was "two weeks". I said was it locked up for two weeks and the handler said yes. You must understand I wanted to grab that dog and run away at this point. We had to carry this animal around. Kneeling down and asking the animal for permission it will let you touch it... They dont know this. The first time he saw me he almost bit me. If he bites an inexperienced visitor - what then. The dog is 8 months. We worked with this animal for two hours trying to get him to lighten up. Eventually he did and he was so happy until he was back in the cage he went back into that terrible state. I asked the worker please take him out for a walk or ask them he needs to go out...he said they not aloud to.... No one will take him unless its someone who will work very hard with him everyday. The workers said the dog is a ****** and doesnt like blacks..my reply is who taught the dog that its scared of everyone. The dog is also malnourished and neglected it was full of ticks. We picked them out of his fur. I feel very hurt and cant stop thinking about him locked up like a prisoner in that cage. Another lady came out with a smaller toy pom...she said this animal is in shock and its whole body was trembling. I asked them is this normal for these dogs - thin, full of ticks, cant eat, petrified. And the staff said its what they have been through...I have been to Randburg spca and their dogs arent like that they are so well cared for you love them. They ready for a home, the spca takes very bad cases and helps them rehabilitate. Im sure that this is what is supposed to be happening. I was so impressed by Randburg there hygiene the dogs go out all the time and they look happy in some weird way. I would like to remain anonymous as I would really like someone to please help the animals at your Roodepoort spca in Nadine road. The animals are in their care and are very neglected.
