Cape of Good Hope SPCAs Response:

We hear your pain, and we feel it too. No one at the SPCA chooses this work to end lives. We are here because we love animals and want to protect them from suffering. But the reality is that we are in the midst of a pet overpopulation crisis. An independent report estimates nearly 4 million stray dogs are struggling to survive in South Africa. There are simply too many animals and not nearly enough homes. When other facilities reach capacity, they bring animals to us, because we never turn any animal away, no matter how full we are. Euthanasia is never an easy choice. It is the most painful part of our work, but warehousing animals is cruel and unkind, and leaving them to suffer on the streets is even worse. We are fighting for change through sterilisation, education, and adoptions. This year alone, 265 adult dogs, 120 adult cats, 96 puppies and 73 kittens found new, loving homes through our rehoming programme. We welcome open dialogue and invite you to visit us. We will gladly meet with you to show you how we work and care for animals.
