Sandton SPCA
I am saddened that I have to write this review about the experience at Sandton SPCA. I have a GSD and have been looking for a companion for my dog for socialising. Had an option to buy a dog but I was like why not be a solution to the current animal problem and just adopt one. So we went to Sandton SPCA to have an opportunity to adopt. First dog we saw and we did a meet an greet was Skye. My dog and her got along very well and few days I called to enquired about her, I was told she was put down because she had an untreatable tumour. I understood that.. they told me there is Jasmine and Jackson available., told the lady I’ll bring my dog for meet and greet. I did that, we met Jackson, my dog and Jackson got along very well. On the day the told me Jasmine wasn’t available anymore( adopted by a white lady). Let it slide, Did the procedure as requested for Jackson, even sterilised my dog and had him chipped with them and asked them to do home inspections. NB (Home inspections).. my dog lives in 2 places, . Polofields with me and Ormonde with my dad where I even bought X2 XL dog kennels for the dogs. After a back and form lengthy process of inspection requests, an inspector came in, inspected my place. The same day later, I got a call saying the adoption is not approved because I live on the 3rd floor it’s not within their policy to approve adoption for people on top floors only ground floor…well Polofields is a pet friendly estate and there are people living on top floors with large /small dogs, cats etc. the lady stated it is not in SPCA policy unfortunately. I was very devastated because this is a 3rd dog I had app**** , that even got along with my dog. I understand the concerns of animal safety and all, but I felt that was just a lousy excuse that grounded the decline of the adoption because I even disclosed the second address of the property for them to inspect. I don’t know what’s happening but are they in a position to tell me from their “Happy homing” posts, all homes ticked all boxes, why is it actually mostly white people adopting?.. just curious.
From that experience alone, I can unforgivably say One can easily buy a GSD from a breeder regardless of the costs, than to go through the ups and downs I have been through even though the thought of being part of a solution to give a home to a deserted dog could have been better. Very disappointing.

Our intention is always to ensure that everyone that comes and leaves our premises has the positive experience about us and about the work we do. I’m sorry this was not the case with you, and we are happy to assist you again so that we can manage your expectations. Unfortunately, you were incorrect in your statement that we rehome our animals to “white people”. I would like to believe that you were selective when you browsed through our social media platforms. I challenge you to check again and you see that all our adoptions go to different races within our various communities. I have looked into your matter, and I have found that there was a mistake done when you wanted to adopt Skype as there was an accidental double booking, however our receptionist still contacted you to advise you of this mistake and apologised to you – which still do again. Sadly, Skype was humanely put to sleep for medical reasons. During the adoption process there were some errors with some of the documentation you had provided us which were corrected. Your home check inspection was declined not only because you lived in an upper floor but due to space. The reason we conduct home inspections is to ensure that the properties upon which we place our animals have the sufficient space to meet the animals needs and unfortunately it would have been cruel to place a 3-year-old German Shepherd into property with just a balcony . In terms of one of 5 Freedoms, we use to measure a welfare of an animal, is that an animal must have Freedom to express Normal Behaviour meaning by providing sufficient space, proper facilities, company of the animal’s own kind. We also factor in the adopter’s profile and as a medical practitioner this could either mean that sometimes you work long hours, and you might not be at home to be with you beloved pet due to work commitments. I have already been informed by the inspectors that it wasn’t easy to even conclude an appointment to have your property inspected. Yes, I suppose if you want to buy an animal you can easily do so especially if you have no financial restrictions however, I advise you against this because that would be exercising your financial ability not considering the needs of an animal. If I was in your position, I would rather move into a property that is spacious and meet the needs of the animal you wish to adopt or find a small breed, a bit matured that doesn’t need a lot of exercise. You can always come back and adopt an animal in need of a home instead of shopping for a breeder. The reason we have so many animals in our care it’s because of the support that breeders receive from the public and of an easy thinking of a way to acquire an animal. Unfortunately owning a pet is more than just using your right to get one but requires your time, love, and that you are responsible with your choices. 06 Jul 2023, 10:11Good day, I did not write that review just out of disappointment only but reasons beyond that. You guys are very selective. I did not have the attitude problem at all with all the stuff that I have to be honest, but the processes and the waste of time I received from you guys..
with Skye: how can there be a double booking, because if a dog is booked you guys mark it. With Jasmine(what happened)? What was the excuse? Because with Jackson Your receptionist told me the application was decline because I live in the top floor not ground floor and it is not within SPCA regulations. The top floor at Polofields is the one with the biggest space compared to the middle floor and there are plenty people living with their dogs in the middle floor. We have parks dedicated for playing and pet friendly which I took your inspector to even see.
Secondly, I was the one calling almost everyday to get someone to come inspect the place, taken from pillar to post.. I even ask 2 home inspections because i indicated even on the form that when I’m not at the house and work long hours these are the system/arrangements I have in place for the pet. Your guys excuses were home inspection by sandton will not extend to ormonde, only JHb SPCA can do that. I even told the inspector at Polofields there are 2 properties which he saw, and said I am busy with building a house in midstream.
So the I still do not have sufficient reason which you have explained that goes beyond reasonable doubt of the refusal, on the other hand you decide to give who you want to give the dog to at the end of the day. But I still stand with the review of saying instead of going through your hustle, rather use that R1000 and get yourself a puppy from a breader than to be taken from pillar to post wasting money and the dog is given to another person they preferred to give it to all together.
