Reckless driving whilst on a cellphone

I would like to bring to your attention a matter of reckless driving behavior that I have witnessed from one of your employees today Wednesday 05 October 2022.

At around 17:50pm I've seen this SPCA vehicle reg number CAA30509 jumping a red light at the intersection of turfhall road and Jake's gerwel (under the bridge). Then again at 18:03pm near samora Machel the very same drive are seen jumping from lane to lane without the use of signaling. Few kilometers later at 18:15pm when I saw this driver at a red light on spine road , I witness this gentleman is on his cellphone (probably the reason for reckless driving).

Please note i am no traffic officer nor would i want to complain but i find it very concerning and trust you could investigate the matter as this type of behavior can lead to accidents or worst, God forbid.

Kindly try and find out the drivers side of the story and perhaps maybe he just needs to be reminded about road safety.

 Dear Naseef  Thank you for bringing this matter to our attention. You also sent an email in this regard, and we have given our assurance that we will fully investigate the matter, which we did.  We had an enquiry with the employee concerned, and he denied ‘jumping’ a red light. We scrutinized our vehicle tracking system report on the date you reported the incident occurred. Our vehicle tracking system report indicates that the vehicle was stationary at the intersection you indicated in your post, being the corner of Turf Hall Road and Jakes Gerwel Drive.  The employee did however confirm that he was on his cell phone at approximately 18h15 when he received a call from our Call Centre for an animal emergency-related matter. The traffic light was however red, and the vehicle was stationary. We have addressed the cell phone matter with the employee, and this will not reoccur again in the future. He will make use of his earphones in future when he receives any phone calls.  Our vehicle tracking system also indicated that the employee had been within the speed limit at all times whilst driving when you observed him driving.  We take matters like these very seriously, and we took the opportunity to address road safety, compliance with traffic rules and driving with care and consideration with all our Inspectorate staff.  We thank you for taking the time to write to us.  Kind regards, Chief Inspector Jaco Pieterse Cape of Good Hope SPCA
