Inhumane treatment of an animal to be euthanized.
Hi, had to have my dog put down due to age and illness. The spca sent a van to pick him up. He was 14 and half. Cross breed dog. The guy did not have a muzzle. He used a nylon rope and wrapped it multiple times around its snout very tightly. When I complained, the guy said it was going to be put down any way. This was disgusting and inhumane and cruel I feel. The dog was clearly in great pain and discomfort. I had no choice because I had signed the indemnity form by then. Otherwise I would have taken it to be put down at a vet. Disgusting.

On 27th August 2025 we received a request to send a driver to collect your aged and sick dog for euthanasia. All of our protocols are explained when booking collections. Our Field Officer reported that upon collecting your dog you said that you had expected him to euthanase on site. This is not protocol and the dog is brought back to our animal hospital to be humanely put to sleep by a qualified Animal Welfare Assistant - which is what our Field Officer explained. The dog was clearly in a lot of discomfort/pain and was understandably snappy when being handled by our Field Officer, so he had to use a nylon rope around the jaw in order to avoid being bitten. The use of a nylon rope is common practice - not only at SPCA - and it is impractical for our Field Officers and Inspectors to carry every size muzzle when carrying out their duties. Our Field Officer said that you did not express any issue with the muzzle at the time.
You were free to cancel the collection even after signing the "owners request for euthanasia" and transport your own dog to a private veterinarian for euthanasia. Please note that the SPCA's mandate is not to collect owner's animals but we do offer this service at a hugely discounted rate for collection/euthanasia/cremation when we believe that the animal would suffer otherwise.
