Highly disgusted
<p>I am very disappointed in the spca benoni my husband and sister in law called this morning 12 October to hear if they could assist me with my sick puppy as an owner of a dog I was concerned as my dog seems to have cat flu and hasn't eaten since yesterday so on them calling to hear that the vet isn't on duty today </p> <p>Isn't a vet meant to be there incase of of an emergency? So basically the animal must suffer till they decide to come to work??? </p> <p>Then called spca Boksburg to hear the vet is on training till the 19th now come on so if you have a sick animal or injured animal they need to suffer till then </p> <p> </p> <p>I thought spca is there to care for animals in need sick, a stray etc </p> <p>Spca is meant to help those whom can't afford private vets yes I know they not a charity organization but there are people out there that can't afford such high bills and just want to help their animals see another day</p> <p>My biggest concern is that I didn't even get told to come in so they can look at my dog and see if they could help just a slap in the face to hear sorry vet isn't in so in other words the poor dog must suffer </p> <p> </p> <p>I'm highly disappointed in how the spca is not willing to help </p> <p> </p> <p> </p>

To clarify only larger SPCAs or those that are fortunate to afford a Vet have the services of a Vet. The SPCA is the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and thus the main mandate is to enforce the Animals Protection Act and protect animals from harm by humans.
All SPCAs are autonomous and do not receive any funds from the Government and most are not even paid for the services they render on behalf of the Municipality. Stray animals are the responsibility of the Municipal law enforcement officers who enforce the by-laws in each town. The SPCA only cares for the strays once they are admitted into their care.
Veterinary assistance may be rendered by some SPCAs but this is not free and is subject to application for Almoning assistance. This requires the owner of the animals to complete an application form, provide proof of ID, residence and income. If they applicant is indigent then assist can be negotiated with the local Vet on behalf of the applicant. Where the applicant does not qualify then private veterinary services need to be sought.
