Heartless Money making treatment from SPCA

On Saturday 1st Jan, we tried several times during the course of the day, to contact SPCA (Grassy Park) seeking urgent medical assistance for our 2 year old Pitbull who was not eating, and this resulting in him being exceptionally weak. To no avail, and not getting a response to the whatsapp message or FB messenger, we sent to the spca's emergency number, we resorted to taking our dog to Rosmead Avenue Veterinary clinic later the Saturday evening. We were told they suspect the dog had something stuck in his abdomen/intestine and would need x-rays to be done ( R4500). Not being able to pay the cost at a private vet, we waited till Sunday morning to take our beloved Tyson to the SPCA. On arrival at the SPCA early Sunday morning, the medical assistant took the necessary blood tests etc ,.and advised us that Tyson had contracted Parvo virus and needed to be put on a drip. On been giving the costs of the needed treatment, and advised of the options for Tyson being admitted (costs R3000 plus) or we could opt for the outpatient medical treatment costs ( R350 on the day plus R120 for the blood test, plus R150 for the treatment, and thereafter R150 every day for the next 5 days. We opted to bring Tyson to the SPCA daily for the necessary treatment. On Monday we took Tyson again as required, he was apparently given an injection and antibiotic? (they refused to put him on a drip as he wasn't being admitted). We were told to buy rehabilitation food as well as probiotics, which we did. We fed Tyson water every other hour as well as the rehabilitation food as prescribed. All the while Tyson kept on vomiting and desecrating blood. On the morning of Tuesday 4th we took Tyson, back for the supposed 5 day treatment, at this stage Tyson was extremely weak. We literally begged them to admit Tyson, but we were told very boldy, They want R1000 upfront before they will admit Tyson And the treatment would cost R4500 Tyson at this time was extremely sick ! The veterinary doctor at this time saw Tyson and asked the nursing staff why this dog was not being treated as required for parvo??? The nurse in return rep**** that dogs over the age of 2 do not get parvo treatment? The doctor (VET) was shocked at the nurses response and said all dogs receive the same treatment for parvo ( which clearly our TYSON was not receiving even though we believed he was being treated as an outpatient for PARVO. This was not the case, and while the VET and nurse were debating the treatment, our TYSON, breathed his last breath, in our presence, (which is still haunting us) In the interim, during this time, the staff and my wife was discussing financial circumstances, as Our Tyson was dying !! The staff never bothered to attend to our dying dog but rather continued debating the costs, telling us they are a private facility??? What happened to the SPCA being a Non profitable organization. ( receiving hundreds of thousands of Rands in donations constantly)

If we could afford the costs of a private facility, we would have opted for a Private veterinary clinic to admit our Tyson, instead of placing our trust into he SPCA, which clearly does not have the animals best interest in hand We are frustrated and disgusted beyond annoyed for the service received! Since I was a child, and for as long as I can remember, the SPCA was always known to be the best vet for sick/abandoned and abused animals! The attitude received today proved our belief to be fatally incorrect Today it was more about the money than what it was about the well being of our suffering dog ! Who died in our presence of. being at the SPCA today, because they didn't care about our dog but rather The money they were wanting It's ridiculous! How does the SPCA's services claim to include excellent veterinary medical assistance, on their website. When they actually proven today to be more concerned about the costs rather than the necessary medical assistance
