Dog being held for randsom
I called the SPCA on Wednesday to come and just attend to my mothers dog Glynnis as she had a growth on her thigh. The SPCA came and fetched her on Wednesday. On Thursday a certain Althea van Heerden called my mother saying that the Vet wanted R200 or R300. As my mother is a pensioner she indicated they should return the dog instead since she could not pay for their services. The lady dropped the phone in my mothers ear. I tried calling her but she kept avoiding my calls till Friday and then again demanded a R1000(R500 to remove the growth and R500 to sterilise her).Again my mother told her she is a pensioner and she said even if she pays in installments to which she answered she will start after she gets her pension this month to which the lady rep**** no its too far. I tried calling on my moms behalf again.Today I got hold of them again and she told me unless we pay the money they would Kill the dog via injection unless my mom paid,because the dog has cancer. Yes the dog has a growth, it might be cancer but currently she is a healthy active dog and I would like her back. Today the doctor called and said if I don't help my dog by giving them R500 they will kill it.
The Kimberley SPCA Inspector spoke to a gentleman on Thursday about the dog with the growth. He was informed that the dog had a cancerous growth which required removal and the cost would be about R500. He responded that the dog was to be returned to die at home. As the SPCA we would be lax in our duties to permit the dog to be returned and to suffer a painful death as a result of the growth. The dog is showing signs of discomfort and pain and therefore we cannot allow the dog to suffer any further. The SPCA has tried to assist the owner and at no time did the owner offer to pay off the costs, as the SPCA would have accepted a signed agreement in this regard. We are certain that if the family truly loved their dog they would do the right thing. We request that the owner speaks to us in this regard so that we can see how we can assist further. We do remind the public that veterinary care is provided and charged by the Vets and it is not within our means to control these costs.
