Disgusting service / SPCA part of the problem in animal cruelty

After years of support to the Maraisburg SPCA I was disgusted in the way they handled a situation.

They went to a premises where dogs were left by the previous tenants. After we informed the Randburg SPCA that we will happily take over one of these dogs Maraisburg SPCA still came and removed the dog.

Then a promise that we can collect the dog and then a call from Erik that the dog is now part of the SPCA system.

This dog that should have never been taken away are now placed in a gage where it could have had a loving home and people that would have cared for it. This in itself is animal cruelty. This dog already bonded with out kids, we ensured that it was fed till such time that we could move him.

We tried out best to negotiate with them but to no avail. We will never support any SPCA institution ever again.

We at the National Council of SPCAs will forward your complaint to the Roodepoort SPCA asking for a response. Their response shall be posted within 7 days.

Response from Roodepoort SPCA:

Muldersdrift area is in Roodepoort Krugersdorp SPCA jurisdiction our Inspectors have authority to investigate complaints in the area, not Randburg SPCA. 

Any animals which have been abandoned are removed from the property and taken into the care of the SPCA. The owner is prosecuted under the Animal Protection Act No 71 of 1962. It is any SPCA Inspectors responsibility to investigate complaints and where necessary prosecute the person who has contravenes the Animal Protection Act. This includes abandoned animals. 

If you had taken one of the dogs, and the owner returned to collect the dogs you could be charged with theft by the owner. 

The Inspector investigating the complaint was informed by several residences on the property that you do not reside there; so, I do not know how your children could have bonded with the one dog. Residence on the property have been feeding the dogs for a week now. 

An animals’ wellbeing and safety is non-negotiable.   

Unfortunately, dogs at SPCAs must be housed in kennels. Our dogs are fed good quality food, they always have warm beds and receive the care they deserve.
