Disgusting service
What disgusting service - I phone this morning to find out if I can bring my cat due to inflammation in his leg. The lady behind the counter told me that she has only one vet and are overbooked. I asked her if she can just have a look and she advise to take the cat to the vet. I told her that I dont have currently R1000 for the vet (I'm a single mom - cat is for my mom to keep her busy after my brohter commit suiside, the cat is for her healing process) the lady then told me I must surrender my cat because people like us want animals but cant afford them. I told her that they offer a service to the public and they are open to assist but cant help for 5 min. She then raised her voice and told me again surrender your cat, My cats are looked after very good and are in excellent condition. I just cant afford currently to pay R1000 for a vet, does that mean I cant look after my cats.?????? The lady should not work at a place that help animals. To say that is disgusting and then after she shout at me she drop the phone. I feel sorry for the animals at that branch on the days they have a little bit of pressure.

On the morning 10/03, we were scheduled to have two vets and had booked a far higher number of sterilisations. One vet unfortunately fell ill and as a result the vet on duty, at short notice, had double the number of sterilisations - as a result we were unable to take any consults. Our receptionist did advise we could assist you Tues 11/03 at 08h30 and gave you alternate options - AACL and SAID, which you declined.
Boksburg SPCA is a charity and relies on public donations to survive – we get no government funding. We pay our vets per hour, we buy EVERY medicine, drug & consumable in the clinic – we get nothing for free! With the downturn in the economy, donations have declined but requests from the public with limited or no funds to treat their animals has risen. We would love to assist everyone, however lack of funding means this is simply not possible.
While we empathise with your situation, the responsibility of pet vet care rests with the pet owner NOT the SPCA.
Our staff are correct in in stating that if we cannot assist a pet owner at a given time who cannot afford private vet care and their pet is suffering, they do need to make a choice in the best interests of their animal – be that surrendering the animal to the SPCA or humane euthanasia.
