Boksburg SPCA - Put your dog to sleep
This is with a very sad heart that I'm writing this review. My friend needed help from the Boksburg SPCA during December 2021. Their puppy of 6 weeks had fallen ill. They took the puppy to the SPCA on the Sunday seeking help. The staff of the SPCA advised her to put the puppy to sleep. She refused and came to me for help. We then took the puppy to the vet. He was diagnosed with the parvo virus. The vet gave him medication, but they could not afford for the puppy to stay at the vet. Reason also for going to the SPCA for help. Unfortunately their puppy did not make it through the night, and passed away in the early hours of Monday morning. With people loving and feeding and caring for him. They even watched over him the entire night in shifts to help him. Now the reason for this review......after her incident I came across a post of the Boksburg SPCA of a lady whose dog fallen ill, she took him to the SPCA, carried the baby on her back. They helped her..... Yesterday we posted a story about a lady who walked all the way to the SPCA carrying her sick dog on her back for help. N***** is still at the vet but looking a lot better today and has even started eating. The vet decided to do a 2nd test for parvo virus and unfortunately the results were positive. Thankfully, Miss ******* didn't waste time with getting help and we caught the virus early. N****** will spend the weekend in hospital. Thank you to all our supporters for the donations towards N***** vet bills. Its fantastic to see how quickly good people respond to an animal needing help. And that's not the end.....when N***** could go home....don't get me wrong I am very happy for the family that their baby is still alive......The SPCA took him home....he received bags of food....new bowl....treats....outside kennel.....new bed and toys from the supporters and they are going to pay for his sterilization. ..... So how is it possible to help one person in such a way and for other they tell them to put their baby to sleep?
Due to the very contagious nature of Canine Parvo Virus (CPV), Boksburg SPCA does NOT admit for treatment any animal testing positive with CPV, due to the high number of animals on our premises and the associated risks. We refer owners to a private veterinary hospital. Private care for CPV averages between R3000 - R6000, which Boksburg SPCA, as a NPO with no government funding, is in no position to fund. Young pups, not yet fully vaccinated, have a mortality rate of 97% after contracting CPV even with expensive private veterinary care and generally pass away within 72 hours of contracting the virus. Humane euthanasia is recommended if owners do not have funds, to prevent undue suffering for the animal.
In Nicky’s case, he was seven months of age and his CPV snap test with us was negative, hence the decision to send him to a private vet (Boksburg SPCA do not have a full time vet on site) to check for bi****y. Had Nicky presented with a positive CPV result on site, we would have had to offer his owner the same option - humane euthanasia - as she, like us, would be in no position to afford the high private vet costs for CPV treatment.
Nicky was fortunate to recover - being older with some immunity helped and the fact the virus was caught in the very early stages by a second test at the private vet.
The only prevention against CPV is vaccination.
