Awareness regarding volunteer work
I would like to bring the following matter up to the directors and management of the SPCA Centurion. On the Wednesday 26th of March 2025. I send an email to the SPCA CENTURION requesting community service for 5 hours for my son for a school assignment. I did no recieve a response I then phoned the SPCA on Monday 31st March 2025. A lady by the name of Primrose answered my call, the line was not clear I could hardly hear what she was saying to me little did I know that this was the beginning of a horror story for us. She eventually told us that we need to get tetunus injections for my son then call again to make an appointment after all that, only then will they tell us if he can come or not. I asked her that so there's a possibility that we can get the injections and then he would still not be allowed to come through. She responded by saying just get the injection then call. On Tuesday morning I phoned again I spoke to Primrose who was extremely annoyed and lacked interest. I explained to her that my son was vaccinated for tet**** at 3, 6 and 12 years. She told me that the vaccines are not valid let me add that my son is 15. So I asked her how are South African vaccines not valid she then Said the vaccines have expired, I guess she meant they no longer in his system but told us that we can come on Wednesday and we should bring the vaccine card. On Wednesday we drove to the SPCA we found her at reception she looked at vaccine card and uttered the words: this has expired then said let me call the nurse. She called the nurse the nurse arrived and also said that the vaccines have expired and my son needs to be vaccinated again. At this point I was not in the mood of trying to reason with them. Bcz I assumed a nurse would know that tet**** injections lasts for 10 years in the body my son was vaccinated at 12 years old and he is only 15. Out of respect for them I said ok we will go get him vaccinated at Dischem centurion mall. When we got to Dischem I explained to the sister the situation and the sister said there's no way they can over vaccinate a child. The dischem sister had to call Primrose and explain to her that she is not willing to vaccinate a child that was already vaccinated. We drove back to SPCA humbled ourselves because we were at Primroses mercy for my son to get his project done. Again we were recieved with such a horrible attitude. Let me just say this is not a complaint this is awareness to other parents that might need to take their kids for volunteer work there. Be mentally prepared for a sticking attitude, lack of knowledge from the receptionist regarding anything volunteer work. I am in no way bashing Primrose but our kids are passionate about animals the receptionist is the face of the organization surely you can do better Primrose these kids might need the help of the organization now but they won't be kids forever someday they will come back NOT as volunteers but DONORS please do better. With that said it was such a tall ask for you to even help us with 3 questions that my son needed answers for we ended up leaving. I don't want to bring race into this but black on black hate is so disheartening especially for an environment that you work it. The white lady was much more accommodating and warmer towards us than you were. You could not even smile at us that's how irritated you were by us. We won't always need volunteer work but the SPCA will always need donors do better. My son had a pleasant experience thanks to Solomon and the other students that were there. As for you Primrose you can do better. I don't want you to be confused when this review comes back like you acted confused when the Sister from Dischem phoned you. I am the mother of the African boy that was there. Not the Chinese or Indians the African boy with the vaccine card. DO BETTER PRIMROSE. OUR KIDS ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT ANIMAL HENCE WE ENDED UP THERE. And last but not least I know the SPCA did not have to accommodate my son, we are not entitled to the time that the SPCA personnel offers to our kids as they have their own work to do. But I strongly feel that the process does not need to be so harsh. We are grateful for the 5 hours. I pray other parents have a better experience. Oh wait let me add that on Wednesday when I asked Primrose that since we were at the SPCA on time to get full 5 hours but she decided to wrongfully send us to dischem for vaccination is the time that we sat at Dischem going to count as part of the 5 hours, she then said to me we can donate to get the other hours signed off. But that ended up not happening bcz one of the guts that was there said to ask it's best to just work the hours otherwise instead of doing that. Again I don't think she had malicious intent with suggesting we donate. I am mentioning it incase she uses this as her defense by saying we wanted to buy hours. We did not that is why we came back again today which is Thursday to complete the 5 hours. It just seemed unfair that we waited almost 2 hours at Dischem because of her and the nurses lack of knowledge regarding the vaccines. Again I am not bashing anyone I am just bringing awareness regarding an unfortunate situation. And hoping that other parents that might be as unlucky as we were are better prepared to deal with Primrose. With that said we are thankful for the 5 hours that we were accommodated for.
On the 1st of April 2025, Primrose Spoke to Mrs. Mogwebu regarding her son's volunteering at the Centurion branch for his school assignment. Primrose informed her that her son needs to be updated with the anti-tet**** vaccine and provide proof, and if her son is under the age of 16 years, he needs supervision. Mrs. On 2 nd April, Mrs Mogwebu came to the Centurion branch with her son. The anti-tet**** vaccine was not up to date. SPCA could not allow her son to volunteer. Primrose asked Philippine, our AWA to confirm the vaccine. Philippine spoke to Mrs. Mogwebu stating that the vaccine is expired in 2023 and that he needs to get another tet**** vaccine. Philippine also stated that Primrose was not rude, however, Mrs. Mogwebu became angry because her son was not going to be allowed to volunteer. The vaccine card that we received is attached to this email. Mrs. Mogwebu and her son went to Dischem. Centurion SPCA received a call from the nurse stating that the vaccine was still valid. As this caused problems, Primrose then allowed her son to volunteer. While we understand the frustrations of the complainant, Tshwane SPCA has a procedure in place, which all volunteers need to follow before they are allowed to volunteer. Thus what Primrose did was acting in the best interest of the SPCA, the animals, and the safety and health of our visitor (Mrs. Mogwebu`s son). Rudeness from our staff members has been addressed, even though it cannot be proved. We encourage our staff to always act in a polite, kind, and professional manner. Three of our staff including Primrose, can confirm that Mrs. Mogwebu did ask to pay for hours for her son`s school assignment. Primrose reported this to her superiors. Upon refusal of such an act, she was then criticized and labelled unprofessional. Trainee Inspector Keo****tse Manaiwa spoke to Mrs. Magwebu, stating that her son must complete the hours and that we do not accept money for it. I hope that you will find all this in order.
