Newton Movers - How not to do a move

Moving can be quite emotional. We all want the assurance that our beloved items will be handled with care and that the person we entrust with these pieces have our best interest at heart. This was not the case wit Graeme from Newton Movers. He arrived with a truck, clearly too small and uncovered. He had a look at my items and then increased his price with R250, which I paid in cash, upfront. As he packed I could see that there was a strong possibility that my belongings could get damaged. Everything was wedged onto his small truck and strapped with dirty ropes, not covered with blankets as promised. When Graeme agreed to move my items I expressed that my Weylands couch had to be moved carefully, now I was looking at my items stacked unprotected agains any element on a dingy little truck and I could help shed a tear. Graeme asked what was wrong and I said to him I am concerned. He became defensive and told me my behaviour was unacceptable, that he has never seen someone behave in this way in his 18 years of moving. This just made me more emotional. He said would offload my items if I was concerned, but I am moving to Vietnam tomorrow and this wasnt an option. I had to let him continue. I found Graeme, insensitive, defensive and patronising. When I spoke to Graeme's staff directly, Graeme told me to stop talking to his staff and stop stressing about the way things were wedged and tied. After-all, he has been doing this for 18 years, what do I know? The only thing that gave me hope that was the two people working with him was friendly, helpful and reassuring, that and the fact that Greame picked a *****ly pear from the bush outside my window with his bare hands... I have no idea how my items will arrive at storage as I am unable to view them on arrival, but I do know that Graeme didn't do a good job of giving me the assurance that it will. Very sad and stressful experience indeed.
