We went to News Cafe Somerset West, 07 August 2026, just after 18:00. The music was ridiculously loud for this time of the evening and we could barely hear eachother. We moved outside to the deck where it was slightly quieter. 30 minutes after ordering our drinks, we followed up with the waiter who said “it’s coming” only for him to ask us in the same breath what we ordered. It clearly wasn’t coming. Time went by, we had our drinks and food, which was to a mediocre level of quality. Consequently, we asked for the bill. 20 minutes later we had to remind the waiter about the bill. Now after such dismal service, the bill arrived and we were further disgusted that News Cafe adds a 10% service fee for its appalling service. So even if the service is highly uncalled for and unprofessional, you’re still required to tip. Yes it’s a bar at night with music, but the surrounding crowd was raucous and obnoxious to say the least…can only imagine what happens there from 20:00 onwards. I left a Google review to which News Cafe responded and said that they value my feedback which is important to them and asked me to provide my contact details for their management team to follow up with me accordingly. I was clearly gaslit and consequently ghosted as now, 11 September 2026, more than one month later, no one from News Cafe reverted. How is it possible that an appalling establishment with exceptionally poor service and a deeply troubling reputation of crime-related incidents is still operational?

Newscafe Umhlanga is the worst because of the rude owner named Ivan. He has no manners and respect when speaking to people who he does not know. I can only image how he will speak to his customers.

I called through at Newscafe Palm Boulevard and asked to speak with the owner Ivan after going in twice to ask for a position as a Kitchen manager or any other positions. The kind person who answered rep**** that he is not available, then I responded with a way in which to reach him. She most likely thought that I was a supplier therefore she supp**** his mobile number. Upon his receipt of my call in his mobile, he cut me off whilst speaking to ask, how did you get my number, how did you get my number the second time around and I rep**** that I called Newscafe Palm Boulevard and asked for Ivan. He was unaware that I had visited the store twice in Umhlanga Rocks where he was opening a brand new store far from Newscafe Umhlanga Palm Boulevard. He asked how can I help you and when I rep**** that I was looking for a vacancy, he cut me off and said there is no job, there is no job. If an owner can behave in such a manner, how do you think he will respond to customers when there are serious issues with his store in Umhlanga. I personally have lots of experience as a Complaint Handler, a Kitchen Manager and even in the front of house but to be spoken in such a rude manner does not come off as an owner who values his guests. I regret to see anybody who has a problem at this store because it is a restaurant and problems are bound to come through. This man is the rudest human being I have spoken to in 2026 or even 2025, in fact I can't remember having a conversation with a person in this manner. Newscafe is a lovely brand and how head office has allowed this person to obtain another piece of the franchise, I cannot understand, surely there must be alot of dedicated people who were willing to invest in the franchise, not just another rude person like this. He had no idea of whom he was speaking to yet he was so extremely rude. I mean even if a person is busy, this does not call for such rude behavior, after all, I did not get his mobile number through 3rd party organizations, it was through his own store in the other Umhlanga branch. Word goes that he has 6 restaurants and God knows how this man will answer for his inhumane behavior.

Bad service at News Cafe Emperors Palace, waiter Reitumetse and crew made us (spouse) wait for an hour just to serve a bottle of wine then after came to say they don’t have it. Had to wait another 30 to go check while they send different waiters to serve us. So disappointed and could not enjoy watching the Pirates & Chiefs match on Sunday 26th April ‘26.

First time visiting this branch since it opened and I love. Way better than the capello that was there. The staff are very friendly too.
