Let down by the system for getting the wrong disease

My mother was a theatre sister all her life. She was 16 when she started studying medicine, and this after she was born prematurely in the 1940's. She was passionate about her career and head hunted by many surgeons and doctors. My mother is now suffering from severe dementia and is in a frail care facility. The funny thing is, the medical aid will not cover her fees there. If she was suffering from cancer or HIV, sure, no problem. But dementia? No, apparently it is not a serious disease like cancer or HIV, even though she cannot care for herself at all, and needs 24 hour care. Also, if she was working in the bank for instance, that medical aid would have covered her dementia care. I am absolutely flabbergasted why other medical aids from other industries will cover a patient's dementia care, but a medical aid for the medical industry will not cover a committed nursing sister who devoted her life to care for other people. Ironically, on my mother's medical aid it says: You're in safe hands. But she is let down by the system for getting the wrong disease.
