This optometrist practice have a special that provides you with 2 pairs of glasses including an eye test for R1290 for single vision lenses. Where the medical aid pays for one and the additional glasses and lenses are free. The eye test went well and I am very pleased with the skill of the optometrist. After the test the optometrist, of course, knew the rating of my eyes. She offered me the above mentioned special, but did not tell me any of the terms and conditions. Apparently a condition of the special offer is that your eyes' rating have to be roughly 1.5. My eyes are much weaker than this. Most if not any medical aid scheme will only cover one pair of glasses and any claiming optometrist should know this better than anyone. I wanted contact lenses as well and they told me that the medical aid will only cover the glasses. I accepted this gladly and agreed to pay for it on my own. Later in the week I received a phone saying I had an additional payment of over R1000 because my lenses does not fall in the special range and the medical aid is not covering for it. I do not understand how they would think the medical aid (I am with gems) would cover a second pair of glasses and above all would offer me a special without going through the terms and conditions with me and after knowing that I do not check all the boxes to qualify for the special and also not informing me of possible additional payments, because then I would have never agreed to the special offer. Furthermore how is it possible for one pair of single vision to cost me over R1000 as that is the only additional payment I am apparently making since "they are still giving me the frame for free." I feel like they were only trying to make money out of me.
