BE VIGILANT WHEN DEALING WITH SHELTERS NOWADAYS
It is saddening how Shelters use church or God's name as a front nowadays while they secretly push their own agendas behind closed doors. I think there needs to be an ombudsman or body that governs these shelters even though they are NGOs. At Ndawo Yakho they claim to empower women with love and dignity, yet ZERO empowerment happens. I would also not use the word "love" and "Ndawo Yakho" in the same sentence - they can't co-exist. The Centre Manager looks at the "clients" with a hateful eye from day 1, giving them a silent message that "I call the shots here and you have no rights". The House-mothers' full-time job is to instill fear of the Centre Manager into the clients' heads. Even though they won't say it out loud, you are supposed to treat her (Centre Manager) like God. They operate more like some form of a "cult" that takes advantage of vulnerable people pretending to help them. They won't allow you to go out; except for 3 ladies whom they have chosen for whatever reason to be the only ones that go out. Even when you want to go withdraw money you have to send these ladies with your card and PIN to withdraw for you. So, what the banks warn against is very much promoted at Ndawo Yakho and they don't see anything wrong with that. The Social Worker is only there for show; she has no rights to exercise her knowledge and duties and also trembles at the mention of the Centre Manager's name just like every client. The rules are there, but the one that no one is allowed to go outside the gate, and the one that you are not allowed to use your cellphones are not in the rule-book, but they are the two most important rules in that shelter. You have no contact with the outside world whatsoever. You almost feel like you are trafficked. They emphasize being a "place of safety" such that one lady's request to attend an interview was turned down. You practically stop running your life when you get there - they run it for you. CAN SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME HOW THAT IS A PLACE OF HEALING TO ANYONE. When you request to leave or exit the shelter for good, the Centre Manager would bring up a "case" against you that never existed before just so she can blacklist your name from getting assistance from other shelters - talk of a controlling spirit. Some people leave because of the restrictions even though they don't have alternative place to go to. Can people who have a heart to help others start opening shelters! Some people are CLOWNING with people's lives out there in the name of helping them. Apparently, this shelter was operating before with another name, so chances are they might change their name again and continue operating. SO BE VERY VIGILANT!
