Deeply Disappointed by NFO – Consumers Deserve Better Protection

I’m sharing this to warn other consumers about how the National Financial Ombud Scheme of South Africa (NFO) handled my insurance dispute — and how disempowering the process has been. After my home was damaged by severe flooding in October 2024, I submitted a claim to Standard Bank Insurance, which was rejected despite two separate assessments by the insurer’s own experts confirming that the damage was storm-related and the claim was valid. I escalated the matter to the NFO in November 2024 — believing they would offer a fair and independent review. Instead, NFO: • Ignored the insurer's original reports validating my claim • Accepted a vague third report that contradicted earlier findings with no real evidence • Dismissed my responses as mere “repetition” even though I raised new, serious concerns • Told me to get an independent expert report — something I couldn’t afford — even though it’s their duty to request such reports if needed What’s worse is that NFO never told me that if I was unhappy with their decision, I could escalate my complaint to the FSCA or Ombud Council. In contrast, Standard Bank Insurance clearly informed me that if I was unhappy, I could go to NFO — which is exactly what I did. Why is it that insurers must tell you where to escalate, but NFO doesn’t have the same responsibility to tell you where to go when they fail you? I’ve since contacted both the FSCA and Ombud Council, who are now looking into the matter. I share my story to remind others that: • You are NOT at the end of the road when NFO closes your file • You can escalate to the FSCA and the Ombud Council for oversight • You have rights — even if the system makes it feel like you don’t This process has been emotionally and financially draining. I feel the NFO did not protect me as a consumer — and I hope this helps others find their voice sooner.
