Extremely Frustrated With MVIA – Full Premium, Reduced Protection
I am extremely frustrated and disappointed with MVIA's handling of my latest gearbox claim and the response to my complaint.
I have had this cover since 2022, and I have never received a full payout for a breakdown claim. In my experience, every breakdown claim I have submitted has been classified as wear and tear, resulting in a reduced payout.
Now I have a major gearbox failure, and MVIA's own response confirms that they do not dispute that the gearbox suffered a mechanical failure. Yet they have again classified it as wear and tear and limited the benefit to 50%.
What makes this even more frustrating is MVIA's reliance on my vehicle being over eight years old and having approximately 253,000 km as part of the justification for the wear and tear classification.
This leaves me with a very serious concern about the value of my ongoing cover.
I am now over eight years into the vehicle's life, and based on MVIA's position on this claim, I have little confidence that I will realistically receive a full mechanical breakdown benefit should another major component fail.
Yet despite this, I am still paying the exact same premium.
That is what I find unacceptable.
If my vehicle's age and mileage mean that a major mechanical failure can be classified as wear and tear and reduced to 50%, then what exactly am I paying the full premium for?
And it gets worse.
MVIA has now permanently removed the gearbox and valve body/mechatronics cover because the replacement gearbox fitted to my vehicle is a used unit.
So I am now paying the same premium while having less cover, and at the same time I have already experienced repeated claims being classified as wear and tear rather than receiving the full mechanical breakdown benefit.
The independent loss adjuster's report apparently does not even identify the specific internal gearbox component that failed. It refers to a suspected worn bush or sealing ring. Despite this, MVIA has concluded that wear and tear materially contributed to the failure.
MVIA says it does not dispute that a mechanical failure occurred.
So I have to ask:
When does a mechanical failure actually qualify for the full mechanical breakdown benefit?
Since 2022, I have paid my premiums expecting meaningful protection against mechanical failures. My experience has instead been that when something fails, it is classified as wear and tear and the payout is reduced.
Now that my vehicle is over eight years old, MVIA's own reasoning has made me question whether I am ever realistically going to receive the full mechanical breakdown cover I am continuing to pay for.
I am paying the full premium for cover that, in practice, appears to be becoming increasingly restricted as the vehicle gets older.
I am extremely dissatisfied with the response I have received and do not consider this matter satisfactorily resolved.
I will refer the matter to the National Financial Ombud Scheme for independent consideration.
I have been paying for this cover since 2022. I do not think it is unreasonable to expect the protection I am paying for to have meaningful value when a major mechanical failure actually occurs.
MVIA: I am asking you to explain why I should continue paying the full premium when you have materially reduced my cover and, based on your own assessment of my vehicle's age and mileage, I have little reason to believe that I will ever receive the full mechanical breakdown benefit.
