Claim not paid
I purchased an expensive Toyota bakkie and, based on the dealership’s recommendation, took out a mechanical breakdown warranty through MVIA to protect myself against major repair costs. Just seven months after taking delivery, the gearbox failed completely — despite the vehicle having passed MVIA’s own mechanical inspection.
When I submitted a claim, it was rejected on the grounds of “resultant damage” caused by a “foreign object” — in this case, water in the gearbox. The gearbox is a sealed unit, and I have never driven the vehicle through water. My vehicle tracking data can confirm this.
Despite these facts and the high repair cost of R44,000, MVIA refused to assist. I disputed the outcome, but they simply fell back on their terms and exclusions — the same contract that I trusted would protect me in exactly this kind of situation.
I’ve since cancelled the warranty, as it clearly does not offer the practical protection it was sold to provide. This has been a frustrating and very expensive experience, and I feel completely let down.
