Unsatisfied with Old Mutual Insure when claiming on house content insurance
December 2019- Whilst having a thunderstorm, our electricity went off. We went to investigate and the earth leakage had tripped. We tried to switch it on again, but the switch did not want to. We had a maintenance company come out, they replaced the switch and electricity was restored. When we checked if all equipment was working, the following items were not working:
· Intercom system
· Garage motor
· Aircon in the living room
09/01/2020- Quotation, with report from the maintenance company was received. We sent the quotation, with completed claim forms through to our insurance broker.
21/01/2020- after several follow ups, an assessor came to view the damaged items. This assessor also measured our buildings and took photos etc
24/01/2020- received a “loss agreement” from the assessor, requesting us to sign. We refused to sign, as the amount was not close to the total damages. When we requested an answer on why this happened, we received a reply that we were “under insured”, as the property replacement value was higher than the insured amount
27/01/2020- We sent through the bank valuation value letter, dated March 2018, to our broker. This was sent through to our broker in March 2018 as well, as the broker needed to increase the insured amount, to be equal to the valuation.
Several mails were sent afterwards, stating that our property is not safe, as the garage door, linked to house, could not be locked, as it was an automated door. Up until today- 16h00 10/02/2020, we have not received any further feedback regarding this matter.
We have stated that, should the insurance require us to increase the amount of cover, we would be willing to do so, but not once, in all our years with the insurance, have they requested an inspection to do a valuation on our property and thus will not settle on the full amount (less excess).
