We went to O R Tambo airport to greet my wife's grand child. While waiting I decided to get something to drink and walked over to Mugg and Bean in the airport. I ordered a Chicken Mayo. Priced at R45.00 on menu. No other indications or in the display. The lady behind the till asked me "Toasted or plain". My answer "Toasted please". Again I was asked "White or brown bread". my answer, "Brown bread please". The order was entered on the till and a price of R R 68.00 was displayed. I paid the lady behind the till and in the same time asked her "The price on the menu is R 45.00. Why did you ring up R 68.00". The flat answer from that came from her "Because it is toasted". Again my request was "Why do you charge R 23.00 to toast the sandwich? That is nearly half of the actual price of the sandwich". The answer "Because it is prepared differently". My question "How is it being prepared different from a plain sandwich other than being toasted?" Again the answer "Exactly, it is being toasted". While waiting for the Toasted chicken and mayonnaise sandwich, the supervisor came to me and asked me if I have a problem. Actually I was stunned. Has it become a standard being charged exorbitant prices not even indicated on your menu or by the people behind the till while taking your order? I was told, "I can arrange a plain chicken and mayonnaise for you". My reply, "Actually I will report this". The answer I received "O you can report it if you want" That was actually a sarcastic reply. Exorbitant means a price, demand, or amount that is much too high and goes far beyond reasonable or fair limits.
