On Friday morning, the 9th of Feb, I went shopping at MRP in Adderly Street, Cape Town. The bill came to R239.98 and I swiped my cousin's debit card for it. The money went off on his side but the cashier claimed that it hadn't on theirs. The supervisor came by and gave me a slip reading R0.00 and assured me that there would be a reversal within the next 4 hours or so. If there wasn't one, he assured me that I could return and get cash back. He said nothing about bringing a bank statement.

On Monday, the 13th of Feb, I make the trip back to the store. There'd been no reversal. The supervisor on duty said that I should have been told to bring a bank statement. I explain that my cousin, the bank account holder, is usually away on business trips abroad and there's no way I can provide a bank statement at this time. They refuse to accept a mini statement. Fortunately, she agrees to follow up with MRPs accounting dpt - she takes the bank card number as a reference.

On Friday, 13th Feb, I receive a call from the supervisor, telling me that there's no amount being reflected in the company's account. I will have to bring a bank statement if I want a refund.

Even if I produce a bank statement, how will the company refund me for an amount that it supposedly didn't receive?! Secondly, this problem was created in the store, why should the customer incur bank charges acquiring a statement, not to mention waste time standing in queues at a bank, for it to be solved? Thirdly, both supervisors made it clear that this has happened to other customers before, why aren't you improving your systems?!

My cousin will be away for an indefinite period. Go ahead and keep money that doesn't belong to you MRP. Way to go!
