Layby not refunded on cash

I was shopping at Mr Price eMondlo mall store 11091 shop 37, I specifically told the cashier BEFORE i made payment that "i want to do a layby payment but i will be returning (refund) 1 item out of the 4 items i had purchased from the layby" BEFORE then the cashier didn't explain that i wont a refund but a gift card and i cannot get cash for a layby refund hence she didn't explain or make it easier by saying i should cancel it and they will retain a 1% as i have readed the contract , my shopping experience was not pleasant as i needed the refund (cash) and told me after i made payment of which then i didn't get a cash refund but a gift card that i didn't intend to take when i Specified that i will need a refund as i paid cash before paying the full amount i would have canceled it and took the other remaining clothes on cash purchase
