Block out curtains that smell

I bought 4 X block out curtains from Mr price home design quarter and sandton city. I hung them unwashed and they made the entire room smell. I tried washing them about 3 times and it had a white residue on it. The curtains still smelled. I googled how to get rid of smells in curtain and used vinegar and borax and soaked the curtains. The curtains are still smelling. These curtains were bought for my babies room and I can't have her sleep in a room with a bad smell. I tried calling design quarter today to speak to the manager I think the person that answered forgot about me because I was holding for 15 min.
